Full mouth teeth Implants

It is not uncommon for patients to lose all  their teeth due to gum disease  at an early age . Before the advent of dental implants , these patients would have to wear full upper  and lower dentures. However, wearing full dentures is not the ideal solution as it is loose and uncomfortable. Moreover, with prolonged denture wearing , the jaw bone shrinks with age and hence the dentures become unbearably  loose . As a result, eating with full dentures can become a chore.  With advances in dental implants , it means that these patients will be able to have a third set of teeth which is fixed and behaves like natural teeth .

The patient, shown  on the left , presents with  severe gum disease. Despite a  regime of scaling, root planning and vigorous oral hygiene,  his  gum condition continues to worsen. All his loosened teeth  were extracted so as to preserve the existing jaw bone for dental implants.

Upper jaw
7 dental implants were placed to support a 11 unit fixed implant bridge

Lower jaw
8 implants were placed to support 12 implant teeth.

The final result  is a full set of  upper and lower implant teeth that is fixed, comfortable and feels like natural teeth. The implant teeth also provide support for the patient’s lip and prevent it from collapsing . As a result, a youthful smile is also achieved.

The dental implants, being anchored to the jaw bone , will prevent further shrinkage of jaw bone with age . The key to the success of this case is to extract all the loosened teeth due to gum disease so as to preserve as much jaw bone as possible for dental implants. After 4 weeks of  gum healing, the dental implants were quickly placed in the jaw bone before further bone shrinkage  occcurs.

FAQ for full mouth implants

I have advanced gum disease , am I candidate for full mouth dental implants ?

Gum disease is not a contraindication for dental implants. However, to prevent the transfer of gum disease bacteria to dental implants , the loosened teeth have to be extracted first . Dental implant is placed only after gum healing of 4-6 weeks.

Will I have teeth during this period. ?

In selected patients with good bone condition , we can place the dental  implants and provisional teeth at the same time. For other patients with inferior bone however ,we will do a staged process . A few teeth will be left in place to hold a provisional bridge while dental implants are placed in the rest of the mouth. When the dental implants are successfully fused with the bone , these remaining teeth will be extracted and the final implant bridge will be constructed on the successful implants.

Is full mouth teeth  implants a painful process ?

With advances in implant surgery techniques , the procedure is relatively painless. To maximise comfort and to alleviate anxiety , we can do full mouth implants safely under I.V sedation with the anaesthesist   in attendance.

I have diabetes and high blood pressure , can I have full mouth dental implants. ?

As long as diabetes and high blood pressure are under control with medication, full mouth dental implants can be done successfully.
